Green 101

What is Green, Anyway?

Green can mean very different things to different people. Whatever your walk of life, or the role you find yourself in at this very moment, the concept of green has never been more relevant – whether on a personal, professional or global level. Certainly there is no "one size fits all" answer, though many of the following definitions of green will likely resonate with you or your clients:

  • Healthier living
  • Conserving natural resources
  • Choosing non-toxic products
  • Reducing your carbon footprint
  • Recycling and reusing materials
  • Buying local products
  • Being socially responsible
  • Reducing energy costs
  • Being gentle to the Earth
  • Investing in a better future

At Green Depot, we recognize that people’s green definitions and goals are about choice. That’s why we provide our customers with a wealth of information and resources, so you can make the most sound decisions possible. No matter what your motivation – whether you’re trying to allergy-proof your home or help a client switch over to solar power – our trained product experts and Green Depot 360 Network professionals can help you make smart decisions that work for your building, remodeling or home improvement project. Call or email us NOW to speak with a Green Depot trained professional, and let us help you realize your green goals.

What Makes a Product Green?

A product can be called green for many different reasons. Green products can be energy-efficient, made from eco-friendly materials, be non-toxic, or meet other types of criteria. Now that green building has been recognized as a significant and growing movement, environmentally responsible materials have become much more affordable, and much easier to find in nearly every category.

Green Depot carries a broad assortment of green building products, though there is no one factor that makes a product the “greenest”, as an attribute that makes a product green in one category may not apply to a product in another. To qualify as green, products can have one or more of the following features:

  • Are low- or non-toxic
  • Do not off-gas
  • Contain recycled content
  • Are made from natural materials
  • Have been salvaged for reuse
  • Are produced locally
  • Perform better
  • Do not overtax natural resources
  • Are manufactured responsibly
  • Afford cost savings
  • Have a longer life cycle
  • Conserve energy or water
  • Can be recycled or disposed of safely
  • Are rapidly renewable

And so there is no “perfect” or “pure” way to build green, but if you can make new choices that are better than conventional ones, you’ve taken a big step in making things better overall. The challenge lies in identifying the products and features that are in line with your priorities and green goals – whether they are motivated by health issues, a decision to reduce your carbon footprint, a way to lower energy costs in your home, or another reason.

At Green Depot, we don’t just sell you products – our trained product experts work with you to understand your needs and goals, and then guide you to the green products and applications that work best for you or your clients. Call or email us NOW to find out how we can help you navigate the maze of today’s green product lines.
